DISCUSSION:

I.   Serving Others (verses 1 and 4)

1. By practicing the golden rule (verse 1).

1) “Each day I’ll do a golden deed by helping those who are in need.”

2) “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12).

3) “Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”” (Matthew 22:37-40).

2. By being a good example (verse 2)

1) “To be a child of God each day, my light must shine along the way.”

2) “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16).

3) “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).

3. By helping others (verse 4)

1) “While going down life’s weary road, I’ll try to lift some travelers load. I’ll try to turn the night to day, make flowers bloom along the way.”

2) “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all” (1 Thessalonians 5:15).

3) “But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16).

II.  Pure Living (verses 2, 3)

1. By praising God (verse 2)

1) “I’ll sing his praise while ages roll and strive to help some troubled soul.”

2) “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15).

3) “Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:21).

2. By being kind, good, and pure (verse 3)

1) “The only life that will endure is one that’s kind and good and pure.”

2) “Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

3) “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world” (James 1:27).

3. By taking a stand for God (verse 3)

1) “And so for God I’ll take my stand, Each day I’ll lend a helping hand.”

2) “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11).

3) “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

III. Recognizing Mortality (chorus)

1. Because life’s sun is sinking low.

1) “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them’:” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).

2) “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15).

2. Because in a few days, I must go.

1) “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

2) “The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10).

3. Because I will meet God and give an account for my deeds.

1) “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

2) “For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

3) “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

1) Serving Others

2) Pure Living
