Hated Without a Cause – Psalm 35

2. About the Text:

1) Jesus alludes to this Psalm and others in John 15:24-25.

2) “If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause'” (John 15:24-25).

3) He was the sinless Son of God.

1. For God to Fight (1-3).

1) “You must not fear them, for the LORD your God Himself fights for you” (Deuteronomy 3:22).

2) “”Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17:47).

2. For the Wicked to Be Undone (4-8)

1) “Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 2:23).

2) “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).

3. Praising God for Deliverance (9-10)

1) “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:10-11).

2) “Say to those who are fearful-hearted, ??”Be strong, do not fear! ??Behold, your God will come with vengeance, ??With the recompense of God; ??He will come and save you” (Isaiah 35:4).

1. We Must Pray for Them (11-14)

1) “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

2) “Therefore ??’If your enemy is hungry, feed him; ??If he is thirsty, give him a drink; ??For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:20-21). (See Proverbs 25:21-22).

2. Endure Their Persecution (15-16)

1) “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: ‘Who committed no sin, ??Nor was deceit found in His mouth'” (1 Peter 2:21-22). See Isaiah 53:9).

2) “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12).

3) “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).

3. Give Thanks to God Regardless (17-18)

1) Reminds us of Psalm 22:22 and Hebrews 2:12 spoken of Jesus after His resurrection: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.”

2) “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

3) “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job 1:21).

1. To Expose the Actions of the Wicked (19-21).

1) “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:11).

2) “”For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (John 3:20).

2. To Be Vindicated for Righteousness (22-25)

1) “This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear” (Acts 2:32-33).

2) “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God” (1 Corinthians 4:5).

3. To Bring the Wicked to Shame (26)

1) “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27).

2) “Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame” (1 Corinthians 15:34).

4. To Encourage Supporters of Truth (27-28).

1) “The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

2) “but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13).
