TITLE: Psalm 33 – Five Great Reasons to Praise God
SUBJECT: Psalms
PROPOSITION: We will study Psalm 33 and note five great reasons to praise God.
OBJECTIVE: Each person should be able to state five reasons to praise God.
AIM: We need to know why we praise God.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Psalm 33:1-3
2. About the Text:
1) Under the Law of Moses, singers praised God on musical instruments in temple worship.
2) Priests also offered burnt offerings and sacrifices and burned incense.
3) In Galatians we learned that going back to the law of Moses means leaving Christ.
4) In Christian worship, the temple is our body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
5) That is where we glorify God today.
6) So, we don’t use musical instruments, incense, or animal sacrifices.
3. The Psalms give us many reasons to praise God.
1) The reasons given in Psalm 33 are just as valid today as they were in David’s.
2) We don’t use mechanical instruments, but with our lips (Hebrews 13:15).
4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.
DISCUSSION: We praise the LORD for His…
I. Character (4-5).
1. His word is right.
1) The Bible is right.
2) We need to trust it to guide our lives.
3) Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
4) Psalm 119:160.
2. His work is in truth.
1) God deals in reality, not falsehoods.
2) Jesus did great works in the Father’s name that we could believe in Him.
3) “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves” (John 14:11).
3. He loves righteousness and justice.
1) He sent His own Son to fulfill justice.
2) “To demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).
4. The earth is full of His goodness.
1) There is more good in this world than evil.
2) We need to focus on that goodness everyday.
3) “Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They shall fear the LORD and His goodness in the latter days” (Hosea 3:5).
5. Praise God for His character!
II. Creation (6-9).
1. God is the creator and by Him all things were made.
1) Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning…”
2) Jesus was there – John 1:1.
2. We should fear the Lord because of His creation.
1) God made this point to Job.
2) “No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up. ??Who then is able to stand against Me? Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine” (Job 41:10-11).
3. His creation was accomplished by His word.
1) Genesis 1:3 – “And God said…”
2) The Word is Jesus – John 1:1.
4. Praise God for His creation!
III. Counsel (10-12)
1. Human counsel is nothing compared to God’s counsel.
1) No one can out think God.
2) “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” (1 Corinthians 1:20).
2. God’s counsel endures forever.
1) He knows the beginning from the end; nothing is a surprise to Him.
2) “But the word of the LORD endures forever. Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you” (1 Peter 1:25).
3. We should make God’s counsel our counsel to be blessed.
1) We do this by making Christ’s mind our mind.
2) “For who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16).
4. Praise God for His counsel!
IV. Consideration (13-17)
1. God sees everything.
1) “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3).
2) “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).
2. God considers everything we do and fashions us.
1) God has infinite time for every person on earth.
2) This is a comfort to the righteous and a curse to the wicked.
3. God is the one who is in control of all things, not the mighty.
1) “the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses” (Daniel 5:21).
2) Today, God has appointed His Son, Jesus to rule over all things.
3) “King of kings and Lord of lords” (1 Timothy 6:15, Revelation 19:16).
4. Praise God for His consideration!
V. Consolation (18-22)
1. God sees those who fear him and delivers them.
2. We need to wait for the Lord – Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”
3. We need to trust in the Lord – Proverbs 3:5-6.
4. When we do so, His mercy will be upon us.
5. Praise God for His consolation.
CONCLUSION:
1. We need to praise God for all the good things He does for us. Here are five:
1) Character
2) Creation
3) Counsel
4) Consideration
5) Consolation
2. Invitation
