TITLE: Praise for the Works of the Lord
SUBJECT: Psalms
PROPOSITION: In this Psalm the singer praises the Lord because the Lord 1) Defends, 2) Shelters, 3) Delivers, and 4) Remembers.
OBJECTIVE: Each hearer will understand to praise the Lord for His works for the righteous and against the wicked.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Psalm 9:1-2
2. About the Text:
1) The Psalm begins with words of praise to the Lord.
2) Praise is with the “whole heart” (v.1).
3) The Psalm concerns the wonderful works of the Lord (v.2).
4) The psalmist is “glad and rejoices” (v.2).
5) He praises the name of God (v.2).

DISCUSSION: The Psalmist praises the Lord because . . .
I. The Lord Defends (3-8)
1. From enemies.
1) They fall and perish at the Lord’s presence (v.3).
2) The Lord rebukes them (v.5).
3) The Lord destroys them (v.5).
4) The Lord blots their name out forever (v.5).
5) The Lord ends their destructions (v.6).
6) The Lord ends their memory (v.6).
2. His people by . . .
1) Maintaining their right and cause (v.4).
2) Sitting on the throne and judging righteously (v.4).
3) Enduring forever (v.7).
4) Preparing his throne for judgment (v.7).
5) Judging the world in righteousness (v.8).
6) Administering judgments for the peoples in uprightness (v.8).
3. There is a great battle going on, and the Lord is fighting on our behalf.
1) “Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17:47).
2) “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:10-12).
II. The Lord Shelters (9-12)
1. He is a refuge; He protects.
1) To the oppressed (v.9).
2) In times of trouble (v.9).
3) For those who know His name (v.10).
4) For those who put their trust in Him (v.10).
5) For those who seek Him (v.10).
2. By His deeds among the people (v.11).
1) He avenges blood (v.12).
2) He remembers the humble (v.12).
3) He does not forget their cry (v.12).
3. God will shelter and protect His people.
1) “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:10).
2) “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
3) “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”” (James 4:6).
III. The Lord Delivers (13-16)
1. From Death
1) By being merciful (v.13).
2) By considering trouble from those who hate (v.13).
3) By lifting up from the gates of death (v.13).
4) To tell of His praise (v.14).
5) To do so in the gates of the daughter of Zion (v.14).
6) To rejoice in His salvation (v.14).
2. From the nations
1) Through their own devices (v.15).
2) Through the Lord’s judgments (v.15).
3) By trapping them in their own works (v.15).
3. God is a God of life.
1) When we follow His word, we will have life.
2) “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
3) “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:30-31).
IV. The Lord Remembers (17-20)
1. To do righteousness respecting individuals.
1) To punish the wicked (v.17).
2) To take care of the poor (v.18).
3) Not to let man prevail (v.19).
2. To do justice among the nations.
1) To judge the nations (v.19).
2) To cause the nations to fear (v.20).
3) To remind them that they are just men (v.21).
3. God will not forget anything that needs to be remembered.
1) “For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).
2) “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.” (Revelation 20:11-12).
