just as i amTITLE: “Just As I Am”

SUBJECT: Salvation

PROPOSITION: Jesus bids us 1) Come to Him, 2) Be Clean from Sin, 3) Confide in Him, 4) Cling to Him.

OBJECTIVE: In this lesson, we will think about the words to the song “Just As I Am.” We will think about how Jesus desires us to be saved and our response to His invitation.

AIM: I hope to encourage each person to think seriously about Jesus’ invitation to salvation and respond.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Hebrews 7:25 – “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

2. About the Text:

1) Jesus is the Savior and there is no other (Acts 4:12).

2) He saves those who come to Him.

3) This is the job that He desires to have.

4) Will we let Him save us?

3. We sing the song, “Just As I Am.”

1) This song was written by Charlotte Elliott in 1836 and widely published thereafter.

2) This song is a conversation with Jesus, the Lamb of God.

3) It has a wonderful message of invitation to respond to Jesus’ plan of salvation.

4) We want to look at the words of this song this morning.

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: In the song, Jesus bids us . . .

I.   Come to Him

1. “Just as I am without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come! I come!”

2. Jesus bids us come to Him repeatedly in scripture.

1) “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

2) “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37).

3) “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37).

4) “And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

3. Will we come to Jesus for salvation?

II.  Be Clean from Sin

1. “Just as I am! And waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot, To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of god, I come! I come!”

2. Jesus died so that we could be clean from sin.

1) “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

2) “so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation” (Hebrews 9:28).

3) “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

4) “And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin” (1 John 3:5).

3. Will we come to Jesus to be clean from sin?

III. Confide in Him

1. “Just as I am! Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

2. Jesus preached belief in Him.

1) “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).

2) “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24).

3) “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’” (John 11:25-26).

4) “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

3. Will we confide in Jesus by putting our faith and trust in Him?

IV.  Cling to Him

1. “Just as I am! Thy love unknown Has broken every barrier down; Now to be Thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come! I come!”

2. Jesus wants us to be faithful to Him.

1) “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life’” (John 8:12).

2) “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him’” (John 14:23).

3) “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:10).

4) “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord’” (Matthew 25:23).

3. Will we cling to Jesus in faithfulness?
