PROPOSITION: To be virtuous like Jesus we must 1) Know the word of God, 2) Demonstrate mercy to the needy, 3) practice self sacrifice.

OBJECTIVE: To understand virtue and to practice it.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 2 Peter 1:5-9

2. About the Text:

1) When I think about virtue, I think about a knight in shining armor.

2) He does what is right regardless the consequences.

3) Jesus is that knight in shining armor.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: To be virtuous like Jesus we must . . .

I.   Know God’s Word.

1. Jesus tempted in the wilderness (Matt.4)

i. He knew the word.

ii. He applied it in context.

iii. He obeyed the word.

2. What is the greatest commandment? (Matt.22:37-40).

i. Jesus knew Deut.6:5

ii. Jesus knew Lev.19:18

II.  Show mercy to the needy.

1. Jesus heals the leper (Matt.8:1-4)

2. Jesus defends the hungry (Matt.12:1-8).

3. “Judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” (James 2:13).

III. Practice self sacrifice.

1. Jesus went to the cross. (Matt16:21-26).

2. Praying not my will but thine be done. (Matt.26:39).

3. His mind must be in us (Phil.2:5).

CONCLUSION:

1. To be virtuous like Jesus we must . . .

i. Know God’s Word.

ii. Show mercy to the needy.

iii. Practice self sacrifice.
