PROPOSITION: A Christian who displays brotherly kindness is going to be 1) Gracious and Giving, 2) Challenging and Truthful, and 3) Affectionate and Loving.

OBJECTIVE: The hearer should understand what it means to love someone as a brother or sister in Christ by displaying the characteristics of brotherly kindness.

AIM: To familiarize the hearer with scriptures that discuss these qualities.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 2 Peter 1:5-8

2. About the Text:

1) Brotherly kindness means to love someone as a brother.

2) This is the Greek word Philadelphia.

3) This is a natural love that we have for those who are friendly toward us.

4) Christians ought to exhibit this kind of love in their life frequently.

DISCUSSION: A Christian who displays brotherly kindness will be . . .

I.   Gracious and Giving

1. To be gracious is to be giving – 2 Corinthians 8:9 – Jesus example.

2. To be gracious is to be forgiving – Colossians 3:12-14 – Read

3. To be gracious is to be thankful – 1 Thess.5:18 – “In everything give thanks…”

II.  Challenging and Truthful

1. Having brotherly love does not necessarily mean constant appeasement.

2. “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).

3. “Buy the truth and do not sell it” (Proverbs 23:23).

4. Jesus told the truth regardless of how people felt about it – John 8:31-32, John 14:6

5. We are to preach the truth in love – Ephesians 4:15

6. Paul loved the brethren, but didn’t compromise truth because of them (Galatians 1:10).

III. Affectionate and Loving

1. We are to be kindly affectionate one toward another – Romans 12:9ff.

2. It is a precursor to unity – Phil.2:1-2.

3. 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a – Read. Put your name in for “love.”

4. We not only have brotherly love, but also agape love as well.
