Jesus the Great I AM

PROPOSITION: To know Jesus as the great I AM we must know 1) God in scripture, 2) Jesus in scripture, 3) Jesus’ teaching about His Person.

OBJECTIVE: To gain a greater appreciation of who Jesus as God is.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7

2. About the Text:

1) In these great prophetic texts, the Holy Spirit reveals through the prophets the identity of the Messiah.

2) He would be called Immanuel—God with us.

3) He would be called “Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

3. Is Jesus who the prophets said He would be, the Great I AM?

DISCUSSION: To know Jesus as the great I AM we must know . . .

I.   God in scripture.

1. Elohim – God – 2606 times used in scripture.

1) Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

2) Exodus 3:6 – “Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.”

2. El Shaddai – God Almighty – 7 times.

1) Genesis 17:1 – “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”

2) Exodus 6:3 – “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”

3. El Elyon – The Most High God – 28 times – Genesis 14:18 – “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.”

4. El Olam – The Eternal/Everlasting God – 3 times – Genesis 21:33

5. Adonai – Lord – 434 times in scripture.

1) Genesis 18:3 – “And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:”

2) Psalm 38:22 — “Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.”

6. Yahweh – I AM – 6519 occurrences in the Bible.

1) Exodus 3:13-14 – “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

2) Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”

II.  Jesus in scripture.

1. He is God – Theos

1) John 1:1-3 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

2) “Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1).

2. He is God Almighty – El Shaddai

1) Matthew 8:23-27 – He demonstrated his power over the winds and sea.

2) Mark 2:1-12 – He demonstrated his power to forgive sins.

3. He is God Most High, El Elyon – Mark 9:2-8 – The transfiguration.

4. He is Lord, Adonai – Mark 5:7 – The demons knew and obeyed Him as Lord.

III. Jesus’ Teaching about His Person.

1. John 8:24 – “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am (he), ye shall die in your sins.”

2. John 8:56-59 – Jesus teaching: before Abraham, I AM. And claim of El Olam.

3. John 14:4-11 – Jesus’ oneness with the Father.

4. Matthew 27:11 – When asked if he was the King of the Jews, he affirmed it.

5. Revelation 22:13 – “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

6. Isaiah 44:6 – “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.’”

CONCLUSION:

1. Jesus is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – Elohim, El Shaddai, El Elyon, El Olam, Adonai, Yahweh. We’ve seen this from the scriptures.
