PROPOSITION: In Psalm 2 we see the eternal reign of the Messiah: 1) The Enemies of the Messiah 2) The Establishment of the Messiah, 3) The Edict of the Messiah, 4) The Ends of the Messiah.

OBJECTIVE: The hearer will understand that Psalm 2 prophecies about the eternal reign of the Messiah.

AIM: Opposition to God’s plans will not succeed but only result in failure and wrath from God.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Psalm 2

2. About the Text:

1) This is a messianic Psalm.

2) Verse 2 speak about the LORD, Yahweh, and His Anointed.

3) The word translated “anointed” is the word for Messiah in Hebrew.

4) Hebrews 1:5 quotes from this Psalm as proof that God’s Messiah would be His Son.

5) This Psalm is messianic – a prophecy about the Eternal Reign of the Messiah.

DISCUSSION:

I.   The Enemies of the Messiah (1-3)

1. What do the Messiah’s enemies do? (verses 1-2)

1) They rage.

2) They plot in vain.

3) They take counsel.

4) People try to out think and outmaneuver God.

5) The root of this behavior is pride.

6) Proverbs 3:5-7 – “be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”

7) “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” (Isaiah 5:21).

2. Who are their enemies? (verse 2)

1) The Lord – Yahweh.

2) His Anointed – the messiah.

3) People don’t want to be confronted with the truth that God rules.

3. What is their goal? (verse 3)

1) To break the bond between the Lord and His Anointed.

2) To cast away their cords from them.

3) People want to think they are free from God.

4) “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved” (2 Peter 2:19).

II.  The Edict of the Messiah (4-6)

1. What is God’s reaction?

1) He laughs.

2) He holds them in derision.

3) God is laughing at the futility of opposing his plans.

2. What is God’s response?

1) He speaks to them in wrath.

2) He terrifies them in His fury.

3) Opposition to God merits his anger.

3. What does God say?

1) “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

2) God’s actions are already accomplished in God’s mind.

3) They are past tense!

4) God doesn’t need to reason with those who oppose Him.

5) His words and actions are set, and no opponent can undo them.

6) “remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose” (Isaiah 46:9-10).

III. The Explanation of the Messiah (7-9)

1. The person of the Messiah.

1) The Lord establishes the Messiah’s identity.

2) “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.”

3) The messiah is the Son of the Lord, begotten by the Lord.

4) “And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God’” (Luke 1:35).

2. The province of the Messiah.

1) These are rhetorical questions; the Messiah rules all of these.

2) The nations are His heritage – gentiles belong to Him.

3) The ends of the earth is His possession – Jews belong to Him.

4) Romans 1:16-17.

3. The power of the Messiah.

1) He will break the nations with a rod of iron.

2) He will dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

3) It is futile to oppose the rule of the Messiah.

4) Why? Because His rule is beneficial; that means all opposition to His rule is harmful.

5) Those who oppose the Messiah destroy themselves.

IV.  The Ends of the Messiah (10-12)

1. Advise to the kings and rulers of the earth.

1) Be wise and be warned.

2) Don’t oppose God’s plans!

3) You are not going to be successful in doing so.

2. What is the warning?

1) Serve the Lord with fear.

2) Rejoice with trembling.

3) Kiss the Son.

4) Cooperate with God’s plans and good things will occur.

5) Hebrews 5:9 – “And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.”

3. What consequences will ensue?

1) Failure to heed the warning will result in wrath.

2) Following the warning will result in blessing.

3) Romans 2:6-10.

CONCLUSION:

1. In Psalm 2 we have the eternal reign of the Messiah.

2. Invitation

1) The messiah’s reign is a merciful, benevolent, and just reign.

2) He has set forth the standard of judgment – the gospel.

3) “on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus” (Romans 2:16).
