PROPOSITION: Jesus died on the cross to redeem mankind 1) with a cost, 2) from condemnation, 3) to communion, and 4) for consecration.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the deeper meaning of redemption as relates to Christ’s sacrifice.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Revelation 5:9 – “And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,’…”

2. About the Text:

1) The word redeem means to buy back.

2) We use it about coupons today.

3) We don’t fully understand the New Testament concept of redemption.

4) Redemption is always: with, from, to, and for.

5) Redemption was something done with people in New Testament times.

6) People were redeemed from being captured by enemy forces.

7) This was how they kept their freedom.

I.   Redeemed With a Cost

1. A price was paid for your redemption.

2. 1 Peter 1:18-19 – not redeemed with silver and gold, but with precious blood.

3. 1 Corinthians 6:20 – you are bought with a price!

II.  Redeemed From Condemnation

1. Redemption is a deliverance out of bondage.

2. The Law – Galatians 3:13-14 – “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

3. Satan – Colossians 1:13-14 – “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

4. Sin – Titus 2:14 – “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.”

III. Redeemed To Communion

1. Redemption means communion with the one who redeemed you.

IV.   Redeemed For Consecration

1. Redemption means having a new purpose.

5. Service – Romans 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies….”
