Why Do We Meet Twice on Sunday?

The scriptures teach that the church met on Sundays to worship (Acts 20:7). However, we are never told how many times during the day on Sunday. Since we have a command to assemble (Hebrews 10:25), one assembly per Sunday would suffice. We should note too that there is no limit to the number of times that the church may meet to study God’s word (Acts 2:46). However, as a matter of expediency, many congregations in the United States have elected to meet more than once on Sunday. This is a decision that the local leadership has made for the edification of the church. We are expected to meet upon the first day of the week to observe the Lord’s Supper and to give according to Acts 20:6-7 and 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. Having said that, we are not supposed to neglect the assemblies that are set for us to attend. Hebrews 10:25 tells this specifically. This means that whatever assemblies that the elders decide to have, we need to be present for them. So, to answer the question specifically, we meet once on Sunday because the Lord requires it, we meet twice on Sunday because we are able and the elders have decided that they want us to meet to be edified further.
