In Exodus 20, the second commandment prohibits idolatry. Idolatry 1) Is a reality, 2) Replaces God, 3) Takes many forms. Each person should know this commandment.
Having no other gods before the LORD means: 1) God comes first! 2) Identify Idols! 3) Repent of Idolatry. To understand the importance of the first commandment in relationship to competition with God. We do not have to bow down to a graven image to be caught up in idolatry.
King Saul claimed, "I have performed the commandment of the Lord" (1 Samuel 15:13), but obeyed only partly. Jesus wants us to obey all His words, not just some.

We learn that we must empty self if we are to obey God in the way God wants to be obeyed (Philippians 2:5-8).
"Thou shalt not covet" (Exodus 20:17): 1) What Covetousness Is, 2) The Old Testament, 3) The New Testament. Each person should know why we must not covet today.
The ninth commandment (Exodus 20): 1) What Bearing False Witness Is, 2) The Old Testament on Lying, 3) The New Testament on Lying. Each person should see why it matters.
"Thou shalt not steal" (Exodus 20): 1) Theft Under the Old Covenant, 2) Under the New Covenant, 3) Lessons for Today. Each person should be able to explain why.
"Thou shalt not commit adultery" (Exodus 20): 1) Adultery Defined, 2) Under the Old Covenant, 3) Under the New Covenant. Each person should know the Bible's teaching.
"You shall not murder" (Exodus 20): 1) The Verb, 2) The Vindication, 3) The Vitality Today, 4) The Value. Each person should explain why this command must be respected.
"Honor thy father and mother" (Exodus 20): 1) Rendering Honor, 2) The Recipients of Honor, 3) The Results of Honor. Each person should understand what honor entails.
"Remember the Sabbath" (Exodus 20:8-11): 1) The Rule, 2) The Rationale, 3) The Relevance. Each person should understand this commandment for Israel and for us today.
