PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will note why we keep God’s commandments: 1) God is gracious, 2) Human Ways are Sinful, 3) God’s Commandments are Loving.

OBJECTIVE: As we study Psalm 119:57-64, each listener should understand why we keep God’s commandments as presented in this Psalm.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Psalm 119:57-64

2. About the Text:

1) Psalm 119 is all about the word of God.

2) There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet.

3) Each letter is used to glorify God and His word.

4) Each section teaches something different about the word of God.

5) In this section, HETH, we learn about the importance of God’s commandments.

DISCUSSION: I keep God’s commandments because . . .

I.   God is gracious (57-58).

1. God is our portion.

1) When God gives to us, He gives of Himself.

2) “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” (Lam.3:24).

3) John 3:16 – God’s greatest gift of Himself.

2. We keep God’s word.

1) Our response to a God who give Himself is to obey Him.

2) “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

3) “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:10).

3. We entreat God’s favor/grace as He has promised.

1) We make mistakes in our walk.

2) We need God’s grace and favor for our lives.

3) 1 John 1:7

II.  Human Ways are Sinful (59-61).

1. Reflection on our own ways brings us to realize that we don’t have the answer.

1) Proverbs 3:5-6

2) Jeremiah 10:23

2. The sooner we move to obey God’s commandments the better off we will be.

1) If we want God to hurry to help us, we must hurry to obey Him.

2) Luke 19:6 – Zacchaeus made haste to receive Jesus.

3) 2 Timothy 2:15 – Be diligent/Make haste.

3. Even when the wicked pursue us, we can still remember God’s word.

1) The wicked do not control the mind.

2) We are to meditate on God’s word – Psalm 1:2.

3) 2 Timothy 2:15 – Rightly dividing the word.

III. God’s Commandments are Loving (62-64).

1. We thank God for His righteous commandments.

1) “My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness” (Psalm 119:172).

2) “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3).

3) Love for God.

2. We have fellowship with all those who obey God’s commandments.

1) 1 John 1:7 – We have fellowship.

2) “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” (Acts 2:42).

3) Love for one another.

3. God has created all things to be merciful/gracious to us.

1) Trust “in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim.6:17).

2) We can enjoy them if we keep His commandments.

3) Love for self.
