PROPOSITION: The Law cannot make a person righteous because 1) It died when Christ was crucified, 2) Sin deceives a person trying to obey the law, 3) Only Jesus can deliver us from the body of death.

1) The basic theme of Romans is God’s righteousness is revealed in the gospel.

3) This chapter continues that theme by looking at why the law cannot make one righteous.

DISCUSSION:

I.   The Death of the Law (1-6)

1. An example from the law of the law’s purview (1-3).

2. The application to Christians (4-6).

II.  The Deceit of Sin (7-13)

1. The purpose of the law was to teach people about sin (7).

2. Sin took advantage of this purpose and produced more sin (8-11).

3. The law was holy and did not produce death (12-13).

4. Sin is what produced death to show that sin is sinful (13).

III. The Delivery from the Body of Death (14-25).

1. The Law is spiritual (14).

2. The flesh is a slave to sin (14).

3. The flesh wins in the battle with the mind for control of the self (15-20).

4. Evil prevails over the me who wills to do good (21).

5. The me who wills to do good delights in the law (22).

6. The law of sin works in the members of the flesh not to do good (23).

7. This is a great conflict and results in a body of death (24).

8. Jesus Christ delivers us from this situation (25).
