TITLE: What do you know about Gethsemane to Golgotha?

SUBJECT: SYS 2021

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will answer three questions: 1) What is Gethsemane and Golgotha? 2) What happened between Gethsemane and Golgotha? 3) What do we need to know about Gethsemane to Golgotha?

OBJECTIVE: Each person should basically know what happened from Gethsemane to Golgotha and why we need to know about it.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Corinthians 2:2 – “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”

2. About the Text:

1) We want to look at what happened between Gethsemane and Golgotha.

2) This is the first part of the heart of the message of the gospel.

3) “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3).

3. We will not give a detailed accounting in this lesson.

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION:

I.   What is Gethsemane and Golgotha?

1. Gethsemane

1) The word is Aramaic/Hebrew and means “oil press.”

2) It is a place name for a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives.

a. It is located on the west side of Jerusalem.

b. It is across the Kidron valley, west of the temple.

3) The name is found only in Matthew 26:36 and Mark 14:32.

a. “Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, ‘Sit here while I go and pray over there’” (Matthew 26:36).

b. “Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray.’”

4) Jesus went there after observing the Passover with his disciples.

5) It was here that he prayed before His betrayal and arrest.

2. Golgotha

1) The word is also Aramaic/Hebrew and means “the place of the skull.”

2) In Latin the same word is Calvary.

3) It was the name for a small knoll outside Jerusalem that resembled a skull.

a. It was located on the north side of Jerusalem outside the walls.

b. It was along a main road.

4) The Hebrew name is mentioned in Matthew, Mark, John. Luke uses the Latin word Calvary.

a. “And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull” (Matthew 27:33).

b. “And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull” (Mark 15:22).

c. “And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha” (John 19:17).

d. “And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left” (Luke 23:33).

5) This is the place where Jesus was crucified and died.

II.  What happened between Gethsemane and Golgotha?

1. Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane.

1) Luke 22:41-44 says, “And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.’ Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

2) Jesus was troubled, sorrowful, distressed, and in agony.

3) He prayed to Abba Father, “Not My will but yours be done.”

4) Angels strengthened Him.

5) His disciples slept.

2. Jesus was betrayed by Judas.

1) Mark 14:43-44 says, “And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, ‘Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.’”

2) Judas called him Rabbi and kissed him.

3) The guards put their hands on Jesus and took him.

4) Peter drew his sword and struck off Malchus’ ear.

5) Luke 22:51 says, “And He touched his ear and healed him.”

3. Jesus was taken to the High Priest Caiaphas’ house.

1) All of the chief priests, elders, and scribes were assembled there (Mark 14:53).

2) They brought false witnesses against Jesus (Matthew 26:59).

3) They accused Jesus of blasphemy and condemned Him to death (Matthew 26:65-66).

4. Peter followed and denied Jesus three times.

1) A servant girl first identified him but he denied (Luke 22:56).

2) A second also said he was with Jesus, but Peter denied with an oath (Matthew 26:72).

3) The third time it was a group of people who recognized his accent, but Peter began to curse and deny it (Mark 14:71).

4) Jesus looked at Peter and Peter went out and wept bitterly (Luke 22:61-62).

5. The Jewish leadership brought Jesus before Pontius Pilate to be executed.

1) “Then Pilate said to them, ‘You take Him and judge Him according to your law.’ Therefore the Jews said to him, ‘It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death’” (John 18:31).

2) The Jews accused Jesus of insurrection against Caesar.

3) “Then Pilate asked Him, saying, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ He answered him and said, ‘It is as you say.’ So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, ‘I find no fault in this Man’” (Luke 23:3-4).

6. Pilate sent Jesus to Herod because He was a Galilean.

1) Herod wanted to see a miracle, but Jesus did not entertain him.

2) “Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate” (Luke 23:9-11).

7. Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate.

1) “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. I will therefore chastise Him and release Him” (Luke 23:14-16).

2) The Jews asked to have Barabbas, a murderer, released instead of Jesus.

3) Pilate still wanted to release Jesus, but they cried out “Crucify Him, Crucify Him.”

4) Pilate washed his hands and gave into their demands because he didn’t want to be accused of not being a friend of Caesar.

8. Pilate sent Jesus to be scourged.

1) “Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.” (Mark 15:16-20).

2) John tells us that Pilate tried one more time to get Jesus released saying “Shall I crucify your King” (John 19:15).

3) They replied, “We have no king but Caesar.”

9. Jesus carried His own cross to be crucified.

1) “And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha” (John 19:17).

2) Jesus could not carry it the whole way, so they compelled Simon of Cyrene to do it (Luke 23:26).

10. The Roman soldiers crucified Jesus.

1) They drove massive nails into his hands and feet (John 20:25).

2) They stripped his clothes from Him (Mark 15:24).

3) They suspended Him on a beam of wood for everyone to see.

4) They crucified him alongside two common criminals (Matthew 27:38).

5) They put the accusation above his head, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews” (Matthew 27:37).

11. The chief priest, scribes and elders mocked Jesus.

1) “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” (Matthew 27:42-43).

2) Even the robbers mocked him (Matthew 27:44).

12. Jesus said seven things on the cross.

1) “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34)

2) “Woman, behold your son!” (John 19:26).

3) “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:34).

4) “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

5) “I thirst!” (John 19:28).

6) “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Luke 23:46).

7) “It is finished” (John 19:30).

13. Jesus died on the cross.

III. What do we need to know about Gethsemane to Golgotha?

1. Jesus died on the cross because it was ordained by God – “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you” (1 Peter 1:20).

2. Jesus died on the cross so that God might be just in punishing man’s sins – “to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).

3. Jesus died on the cross to be the sacrifice for sins – “But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:12-14).

4. Jesus died on the cross for the ungodly – “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).

5. Jesus died on the cross to be delivered up for our offenses – “who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification” (Romans 4:25).

6. Jesus died on the cross that we might be saved from wrath – “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9).

7. Jesus died on the cross to forgive sins – “in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:14).

8. Jesus died on the cross to bring peace – “and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:20).

9. Jesus died on the cross to show true humility – “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

10. Jesus died on the cross to redeem mankind – “knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

11. Jesus died on the cross so that we may be righteous before God – “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

12. Jesus died on the cross to bring us to God – “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

13. Jesus died on the cross to demonstrate God’s love – “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

14. Jesus died on the cross to purchase the church – “which he purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28).

15. Jesus died on the cross to nail the Old Law to the cross – “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14).

16. Jesus died on the cross so that God might justify those who have faith in Jesus – “to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).

17. Jesus died on the cross that we might come into the likeness of His death, burial, and resurrection and so identify with Him – “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).
