TITLE: The Christian’s Inheritance

SUBJECT: Hope of Heaven

PROPOSITION: In this lesson, we will discuss the Christian’s inheritance: 1) Who Gets it, 2) How they get it, 3) When and Where they get it, and 4) What do they get?

OBJECTIVE: Each person should understand the Christian’s inheritance.

AIM: Each person may be motivated to receive this great inheritance.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Peter 1:3-5

2. About the Text:

1) An inheritance is anything received from one’s progenitors after they die.

a. Money

b. Land

c. Stocks and Bonds

d. Possessions

2) An inheritance is usually legally guaranteed in a document called a will.

3) This is a legal instrument that determines what to do with one’s belongings after death.

4) In ancient Israel, an inheritance was associated with land owned by the family.

5) The Law of Moses commanded that one’s children receive the land owned by their parents and that it stay in the family (Numbers 27:6-11, 33:54).

6) God’s desire was that every family in Israel receive an inheritance (Ruth 4:5, 10).

7) The tribe of Levi did not receive a land inheritance, but the did have one.

8) They served in the tabernacle/temple and received of the offerings (Deuteronomy 18:1).

9) “Therefore they shall have no inheritance among their brethren; the Lord is their inheritance, as He said to them” (Deuteronomy 18:2).

DISCUSSION:

I.   Who Gets the Inheritance?

1. Not the sinful (Ephesians 5:5).

2. Only for the qualified (Colossians 1:12).

3. Gentiles in Christ (Ephesians 3:6).

4. Faithful husbands and wives (1 Peter 3:7).

5. Those sanctified by faith in Jesus (Acts 26:18).

6. The poor of this world who are rich in faith and love Him (James 2:5).

7. Those who are Christ’s (Romans 8:17, Galatians 3:29).

8. The children of God (Galatians 4:7).

II.  How do they get the inheritance?

1. By the promise of God (Galatians 3:18, Hebrews 9:15).

2. By the word of God (Acts 20:32).

3. By being justified by His grace (Titus 3:7).

4. By being sanctified by faith in Jesus (Acts 26:18).

5. By becoming a child of God (Galatians 3:26-29).

6. Guaranteed by the indwelling Spirit (Ephesians 1:14).

III. Where and when do they get the inheritance?

1. In Christ (Ephesians 1:11).

2. Will receive from the Lord (Colossians 3:24).

3. In Eternity (Hebrews 9:15).

4. In Heaven (1 Peter 1:4).

IV.  What is the inheritance?

1. Equal to Christ’s inheritance (Galatians 4, Romans 8).

2. Incorruptible, undefiled, and does not fade away (1 Peter 1:4).

3. The saints (Ephesians 1:18).

4. The city which God has prepared (Hebrews 11:16).

5. The Lord is our portion and we are the portion of the Lord (Numbers 18:20, Deuteronomy 32:9, Psalm 16:5, 119:57, Jeremiah 51:19, Lamentation 3:24).

CONCLUSION:

1. We have looked at the Christian’s inheritance.
