DISCUSSION: The Holy Spirit . . .

I.   Inspired the Gospel which the Bride Believed

1. Jesus promised that the apostles would have His teaching.

1) “For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say” (Luke 12:12).

2) “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26).

2. God revealed His word to the inspired apostles and prophets so that we could have God’s word.

1) “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:10-13).

2) “How that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 3:3-5).

3. When we read these words, we are not reading man’s opinion, but God’s truth

1) “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).

2) “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake” (1 Thessalonians 1:5).

II.  Indwells the Bride

1. God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.

1) “And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him” (Acts 5:32).

2) “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).

2. The Holy Spirit continues to dwell in the Christian.

1) “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

2) “That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us” (2 Timothy 1:14).

3. Christians live in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

1) “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).

2) “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen” (2 Corinthians 13:14).

III. The Holy Spirit Seals the Bride and Guarantees Her Inheritance

1. Christians are sealed (authenticated) by the Holy Spirit.

1) “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).

2) “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).

2. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee that the Christian will receive the inheritance.

1) “Who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 1:22).

2) “Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee” (2 Corinthians 5:5).

3. God knows who belongs to Him.

1) “Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19).

2) “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own” (John 10:14).

CONCLUSION:

1. The bride is blessed with the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit

1) Inspired the Gospel which the Bride Believed

2) Indwells the Bride

3) Seals the Bride and Guarantees her Inheritance
