The Promise of the Holy Spirit

1. Read: Galatians 3:14 – “That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

2. About the Text:

1) The Promise of the Holy Spirit here is the Holy Spirit Himself.

2) All Christians are promised the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

3) “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).

4) There are many promises related to the Holy Spirit in the scriptures.

5) We will study the baptism of the Holy Spirit in a different lesson.

1. Several prophets spoke of a time when God would “pour out” the Holy Spirit.

2. Pouring out water is an image of giving, sharing, and hospitality.

3. Pouring out one’s spirit is a metaphor of sharing your thoughts and ideas.

4. “Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you” (Proverbs 1:23).

5. “For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring” (Isaiah 44:3).

6. “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” (Joel 2:28-29). See also Acts 2:17-18.

2. “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me” (Acts 1:4).

3. “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear” (Acts 2:33).

4. This promise was a promise of power that comes from the Holy Spirit.

1. “But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you” (Matthew 10:19-20).

2. “But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:11).

3. “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say” (Luke 12:11-12).

4. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26).

5. These promises were promises of inspiration of the Holy Spirit that Jesus gave to his apostles.

1. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:16-18).

2. The word “helper,” “comforter,” is the Greek word parakletos – a person who comes and puts his arm around your shoulder to encourage you – an encourager.

3. “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me” (John 15:26).

4. “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you” (John 16:7).

5. These verses teach that the Holy Spirit would encourage and be with them as Jesus had.

1. “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The LORD is my helper; ??I will not fear. ??What can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 13:5-6).
