Justice for the Earth

justiceTITLE: Justice for the Earth

SUBJECT: Justice

PROPOSITION: Justice for the Earth entails: 1) Common Justice, 2) Cry for Justice, 3) Coming Justice.

OBJECTIVE: Each listener should understand that justice in the earth now is incomplete, but not final. One day God’s justice will be finished through Christ Jesus.

AIM: To study and understand Revelation 6.

1. Read: Revelation 6:12-17

2. About the Text:

1) We’ve got to go back to Revelation 5 to understand Revelation 6.

2) Revelation 5 is the presentation of the scroll to the Lamb.

3) Who is the Lamb? It is Jesus Christ.

4) What is this scroll?

5) It is something that only Jesus could do: salvation.

6) The opening of this scroll is the story of salvation through Christ Jesus.

7) Having that in mind, we turn to Revelation 6 when the first seal is opened.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: Justice for the Earth Entails . . .

I.   Common Justice (1-8).

1. The story of salvation begins in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15).

2. The first horseman rides a white horse.

1) This is the pre-incarnate Jesus – see Revelation 19:22-24.

2) God has always reigned as the one true King over the world.

3) Psalm 47:2 – “For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.”

4) This great King seeks to conquer.

5) Psalm 45:2-5 – The Messiah has a sword, bow, arrows and he ride.

6) After the fall, the second person of the Godhead began working to bring redemption.

3. The second horseman rides a red horse.

1) Red is the color of blood.

2) This rider takes peace from the world by using great violence.

3) Not long after sin entered the world, Cain killed Abel (Genesis 4:8).

4) “The earth was filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11).

5) With sin in the world, peace is destroyed between humans.

4. The third horseman rides a black horse.

1) Black is the color of hopelessness.

2) The one who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hands.

3) Scales are used as an instrument of justice.

4) Proverbs 16:11 – “Honest weights and scales are the Lord’s; All the weights in the bag are His work.”

5) There is a voice that talks about fair prices for commodities.

6) We cannot hope for true justice simply trying to be “fair” to each other.

7) Many are dealt with unjustly and die without justice under this system.

5. The fourth horseman rides a pale horse.

1) The pale color represents the paleness of the skin at death.

2) Death rides this horse, and Hades follows with him (see Rev.20:13).

3) These have power over 1/4th of the earth to kill with . . .

a. Sword

b. Hunger

c. Death

d. Beasts

4) Romans 5:12, 14 – “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned . . . Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.”

6. We see represented in these four horseman a system of common justice in the earth.

1) It is imperfect.

2) What the earth needs is not common justice, but uncommon justice.

II.  Cry for Justice (9-11).

1. The fifth seal is opened.

1) We see under the altar of sacrifice, the souls of the martyrs.

2) They were killed for the word of God.

3) These are those Jesus talks about in Luke 11:49-51 – “Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.”

2. These martyrs cry out for justice.

1) The system of justice in the earth did not avenge them.

2) They want the Lord to avenge their deaths.

3) They want to know “How long?”

4) Psalm 74:10 – “O God, how long will the adversary reproach? Will the enemy blaspheme Your name forever?”

3. The Lord answers these martyrs.

1) He gives them a white robe (see Revelation 7:14).

2) Note that the blood of Christ cleanses those under the Old Law also – Hebrews 9:15 “And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

3) They are told to rest a little while – see Hebrews 4:9-10.

4) The number of their fellow servants and their brethren to be killed was not complete.

5) It was not yet time for final justice has not come.

III. Coming Justice

1. The sixth seal is opened.

2. Earthly and heavenly events transpire.

1) There is an earthquake.

2) The sun becomes black.

3) The moon turns to blood – see Joel 2:31.

4) The stars fall to the earth like figs.

5) The sky is rolled up like a scroll – see Isaiah 34:4.

6) This is divine change and divine justice about to be unleashed.

3. All humanity will seek escape.

1) The powerful – kings, great men, rich men, commanders, mighty men.

2) The lowly – all slaves.

3) The common – all free.

4) No one is exempted.

5) Final justice will come for all one day.

6) 2 Corinthians 5:10 – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

7) These say to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!” – See also Hosea 10:8.

4. Who will release divine justice?

1) The One who sits on the throne.

2) The Lamb

3) None will be able to stand against His wrath.

5. Jesus is coming, and when He comes again, He will come with vengeance.

1) 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “…and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”

2) Hebrews 10:26-31.

3) However, Jesus became the curse for us if we will believe and trust in Him.

4) Galatians 3:13 – “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’).”

5) God will have final justice.

1. Justice for the earth means . . .

1) Common Justice – It does not get the job done.

2) Cry for Justice – God will avenge the death of His saints.

3) Coming Justice – Jesus will bring justice when He returns.

2. Invitation

1) There is only two ways for God to have justice upon sinful man.

2) Either you accept the offer to identify with Jesus and let Jesus take the punishment for your sin.

3) Or you retain to yourself the punishment for your own sins.

4) Romans 6:23
