How Does God Keep Man Justified? – Romans 6

TITLE: How does God Keep Man Justified – Romans 6

SUBJECT: Romans

PROPOSITION: God keeps man justified by 1) Creating a New Man in Christ, 2) Giving Grace so that a Sin does not Reign Over Us, and 3) Expecting Us to be Servants of Righteousness.

OBJECTIVE: Each person will be able to explain from Romans 6 how God keeps man justified.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Romans 6:1-2

2. About the Text:

1) In chapter five, Paul explained that grace was the reason that God justified man by faith.

2) The natural question that arises is, “Can we keep on sinning and let grace cover our sins?”

3) The answer is “No,” because that would create a situation where we are no longer justified.

4) Whoever continues to practice sin is not justified.

5) “In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother” (1 John 3:10).

6) Christians must practice righteousness to continue to be justified by God.

7) That is what Romans 6 is about.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: God keeps man justified by . . .

I.   Creating a New Man in Christ (1-11).

1. We are baptized into Christ death so that we can be resurrected with him.

2. This gives us a new life in Christ.

3. The old man of sin was crucified with Jesus so that we will no longer be slaves to sin.

4. The one who has died with Christ is freed from sin.

5. If we died with Christ, we will also live with him.

6. Death does not have dominion over Christ.

7. Christ died once to sin.

1) He was put on the cross because of the sins of mankind.

2) He died at the hand of sin.

3) But He Himself was sinless.

8. Now, He lives to God.

9. Therefore, those who are in Christ share in His death and His life.

10. They are dead to sin, but alive to God just like Jesus Christ.

II.  Giving Grace so that Sin does not Reign over Us (12-14).

1. As Christ did not let sin reign in Him, neither should we let sin reign in us.

2. We should not obey its lusts.

3. We should use our bodies as tools of unrighteousness for sin.

4. We should use our bodies as tools of righteousness for God.

1) We are alive from the dead having been forgiven of sin.

2) Being alive from the dead means we must live life for God.

5. Sin will not have dominion over us.

1) Sin has dominion over those under the law.

2) It does not have dominion over those under grace.

6. We are not under law but under grace.

1) With grace we have ongoing forgiveness.

2) We can start over when we sin.

3) Sin is not our master.

4) Grace controls us, not sin.

III. Expecting Us to be Servants of Righteousness

1. This does not mean that we may sin because we are under grace.

2. We are all slaves of either sin or righteousness.

3. When we obeyed the form of doctrine given to us . . .

1) We stopped being slaves of sin.

2) We started being slaves of righteousness.

4. When we were in our sins, uncleanness generated more lawlessness due to sin.

5. In Christ, we present ourselves slaves to righteousness to obtain holiness.

1) Holiness is the state of being separated from sin.

2) It is the state of being like God and Christ who are without sin.

6. When we were slaves of sin, we were free from righteousness.

7. The fruit of a life free of righteousness is death.

8. Being free from sin and slaves to God means bearing the fruit of holiness.

9. Ultimately, the end of holiness is everlasting life.

10. The wages of sin is death.

11. The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.
