INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Psalm 107:1-3

2. About the Text:

1) There are many more good things that happen on a daily basis than bad things.

2) Do we thank God for all of the good things that happen in life?

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: Gives thanks to God for his goodness because He . . .

I.   Fills the Hungry Soul

1. Read Psalm 107:4-9

2. Consider all of the things that go into bringing food to the table.

1) The farmers.

2) The truck drivers.

3) The factory workers.

4) The merchants and vendors.

5) It takes many people.

6) God created all of these people.

7) He gives them talent to do their work.

8) In doing this, God provides for us.

3. We should thank God for . . .

1) Wisdom within each person to work: “Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?” (Job 38:36).

2) “And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17).

3) God’s creation of community: “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’” (Genesis 2:18).

II.  Breaks the Chains of Imprisonment

1. Read Psalm 107:10-16

2. Consider those bound in irons because of rebellion against authority.

1) As a result, they are imprisoned.

2) When they repent, however, God hears their prayers.

3) They may be released from prison through good behavior.

3. We should thank God for . . .

1) Giving us a standard of right and wrong to live by: “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments…I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live” (Deuteronomy 30:15-16, 19).

2) For telling us when we do wrong: “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:19).

3) For blessing us when we do right: “But He said, ‘More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!’” (Luke 11:28).

III. Delivers Us from Our Own Destruction

1. Read Psalm 107:17-22

2. Consider that sin has consequences.

1) Disease.

2) Broken relationships.

3) Psychological Trouble.

4) Being lost in sin.

3. We should thank God for . . .

1) Healing us of any disease we may contract due to sin: “And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5:15).

2) Helping us heal psychologically: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

3) Providing for spiritual salvation: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

IV.  Guides us to Our Desired Haven

1. Read Psalm 107:23-32

2. Consider that God leads us on a daily basis.

1) Through His word and Holy Spirit.

2) By the example of His Son, Jesus.

3) Through His providence.

3. We should thank God for . . .

1) For His revealed word: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

2) For Jesus: “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

3) For being the greatest giver: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

4) For giving us an eternal home to go to: “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1-3).

V.   Gives Fertility to the Land

1. Read Psalm 107:33-38

2. Consider that God made the earth to be fertile:

1) The water that is in the earth: “saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.’” (Revelation 14:7).

2) The fertility of the earth: “Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” (Acts 14:17).

3) The existence of livestock: “And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:25).

VI.  Executes Justice

1. Read Psalm 107:39-43

2. Consider that God brings justice to mankind in many ways.

1) Against rulers who oppress the poor.

2) He lifts up the poor and gives them family.

3) He rewards the righteous with seeing good things in the world.

3. We should thank God for . . .

1) The blessing of government: “Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good” (1 Peter 2:13-14).

2) Our families: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate” (Psalm 127:3-5).

3) Permitting us to witness the much good that happens in the world: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever” (Psalm 23:5-6).

CONCLUSION:

1. We should thank God for all of His goodness:

1) He Fills the Hungry Soul

2) He Breaks the Chains of Imprisonment

3) He Delivers Us from our own Destruction

4) He Guides Us to our Desired Haven

5) He Gives Fertility to the Land

6) He Executes Justice for all
