INTRODUCTION:

3) However, we can certainly sing of God’s greatness as we seek to praise Him.

4) One of the great songs of the church that praises God is the song “How Great Thou Art.”

5) This song was written by Carl Gustav Boberg, a Swede, who was inspired by a thunderstorm to reflect upon the greatness of God.

6) It was originally written in 1885 in Swedish with nine verses but later translated into English.

7) Stuart K. Hine translated the poem into English and added two verses of his own in 1949.

8) This is what is in our hymnals today.

9) Let us now turn our thoughts and reflections upon the scriptures that inspired such a hymn.

1) “For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thess.4:15-17).

1) “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

2) “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Rev.5:12-13).
