The Purpose of Money

God never gave Adam and Eve any money. Humans invented money to facilitate exchanges.  Money is just a tool; it has no value beyond what we assign to it. Its only value is in what it can be used for, and if we are not using it, we are valuing it wrongly.

In Luke 12:15, Jesus said, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” After this profound evaluation, Jesus told “The Parable of the Rich Fool.”

Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

The man in this parable thought that his worth was defined by his possessions. He wanted to save as much as he could. He probably thought that he was doing the right thing. However, he was not rich toward God. When his life ended, he had nothing. The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:7, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” If one defines his life by money, what will he think of himself when he has none?

God bless you, and I love you.
