Forbidden Words – Proud Words

Psalm 12:3-4 states, “May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, And the tongue that speaks proud things, Who have said, ‘With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; Who is lord over us?’”

In the final analysis, all speech that is proud in its origins, that is, that does not acknowledge God as Lord over one’s speech, is sinful. This is the attitude of many in our country today. They claim that their tongue belongs to them, and they may use it however they see fit. They have forgotten that everything belongs to God, including our tongues. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.” The last part of that verse says, “and those who dwell therein.” That includes human beings. First Corinthians 6:20 says, “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” The body and the spirit belong to God. This includes our tongues.

Many will be condemned for using their tongues wrongly. Jesus said, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:36-37). James tells us that everyone has committed sin with the tongue because “No man can tame the tongue” (James 3:8). Are we using our words to glorify and honor God, or are we using our words for our own gratification and aggrandizement? We must humble ourselves and use our words for what is right, good, and holy, not for sinful and selfish purposes. May God bless us as we strive to purify our speech in service to Him!

God bless you, and I love you.
