DISCUSSION:

I.   David’s Desire (1-3).

1. He remembers God in a time of peace (1).

1) There’s nothing wrong with remembering God in times of trouble.

2) “But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: He is their stronghold in the time of trouble” (Psalm 37:39).

3) “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me” (Psalm 50:15).

4) We want to remember him in times of peace as well.

5) “And in that day you will say: ‘Praise the Lord, call upon His name; Declare His deeds among the peoples, Make mention that His name is exalted’” (Isaiah 12:4).

2. He recognizes the need for God to be honored (2).

1) David had pursued his own things and recognized the need to honor God.

2) “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1).

3) It is always appropriate to praise God.

4) “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15).

3. He reveals his desires with God’s prophet (3).

1) He talked to someone he trusted about his plans.

2) “Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established” (Psalm 15:22).

3) “Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established” (Proverbs 16:3).

II.  God’s Design (4-17).

1. God emends David’s desire (4-7).

1) God didn’t want a permanent structure.

2) “The plans of the heart belong to man; But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD” (Proverbs 16:1).

3) “By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God” (Hebrews 11:9-10).

2. God elevates David name (8-9).

1) “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart’” (1 Samuel 16:7).

2) “As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister to Me’” (Jeremiah 33:22).

3. God establishes His people (10-11).

1) “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it” (Isaiah 2:2).

2) “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:18-19)

4. God ensures David’s future (11-17).

1) “Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—The sure mercies of David.” Isaiah 55:3

2) “I will establish one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them—My servant David. He shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken.” (Ezekiel 34:23-24).

3) “David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd; they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them.” (Ezekiel 37:24).

III. David’s Devotion (18-29).

1. Attitude of Humility (18-21)

1) “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:10).

2) “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).

2. Acknowledgement of God’s Supremacy (22)

1) “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.” “I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: ‘Your seed I will establish forever, And build up your throne to all generations.’” Selah” (Psalm 89:1-4).

2) “The Lord reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The Lord is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved” (Psalm 93:1).

3. Accolades for God’s People (23-24).

1) David loved God’s people.

2) “For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?” (Deut.4:7).

3) God’s people are a great people. “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9)

4. Acceptance of God’s Design (25-29).

1) God wanted to build a house for David, and David accepted this.

2) The church is the house that God built for David: “but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:5).

3) “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:11).

4) We need to accept God’s design today also.
