God is a Just God

1. Read: Psalm 7:1-2

2. About the Text:

1) This Psalm was written because of an accusation made against David.

2) It is a prayer in which David wrestles with the accusation and comes to resolution.

3) Everyone who lives will be falsely accused of something.

4) How will we handle the accusation?

5) We must put our faith and trust in God to handle many matters such as this.

1. We will trust God and not man because of God’s integrity (1).

2. Men will persecute us until there is nothing left whether they are right or wrong (1-2).

1) “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake” (Matthew 24:9).

2) “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake” (Luke 21:17).

3. If we are in the wrong, then we should accept our just desserts (3-5).

1) “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.” (1 Peter 4:15).

2) “For if I am an offender, or have committed anything deserving of death, I do not object to dying; but if there is nothing in these things of which these men accuse me, no one can deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar” (Acts 25:11).

4. Our prayer, however, is for God, not man, to carry out that justice (3-5).

1) “And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man” (2 Samuel 24:14).

2) God’s integrity is absolute; He always does what is right.

1. God’s judgments are meted out equally to the offense given (6).

1) God gets angry when His people are treated unjustly.

2) “since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you” (2 Thess.1:6).

3) “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).

2. God’s judgments may be called upon in time of need (6-7).

1) We should want God to be the judge.

2) “He will redeem their life from oppression and violence; And precious shall be their blood in His sight” (Psalm 72:14).

3. God judges everyone for both good and ill (8).

1) “For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

2) “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Cor.5:10).

4. God’s judgments are designed to end wickedness and establish righteousness (9).

1) “For ‘He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it’” (1 Peter 3:10-11).

2) “Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:7).

5. God’s judgments test the righteous (9).

1) “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, But the Lord tests the hearts” (Proverbs 17:3).

2) “For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us as silver is refined” (Psalm 66:10).

6. God’s judgments defend and save the righteous (10).

1) “Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies” (Romans 8:33).

2) “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

7. Notice in this section that the relationship that supersedes all others is our relationship with God.

1. God is just (11).

1) “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He” (Deut.32:4).

2) “to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).

2. God is angry everyday because of wickedness (11).

1) “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18).

2) “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 5:6).

3. God is prepared to deal justly with the wicked even to the point of death (12-13).

1) “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (2 Peter 3:7).

2) “These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

4. The wicked are the ones who are responsible for trouble and falsehoods (14).

1) “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin” (Deut.24:16).

2) “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself” (Ezekiel 18:20).

5. The wicked and only the wicked are responsible for the punishment they deserve (15-16).

1) “Their blood shall be upon them” (Leviticus 20).

2) “then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head” (Ezekiel 33:4).

1) Integrity.

2) Judgments.

3) Punishments.

2. For these reasons, we can praise God!

3. The Psalmist concludes with: “I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.”
