TITLE: The Bride, The Lamb’s Wife – New Jerusalem

SUBJECT: Revelation

PROPOSITION: In Revelation 21, we see how the righteous live forever in the city of New Jerusalem. We see 1) The Coming of the City, 2) The Composition of the City, 3) The Consecration of the City.

OBJECTIVE: Each hearer should understand that the New Jerusalem is a spiritual city that will be eternally inhabited by the righteous.

AIM: It is my aim to impress upon each person that this city is the people of God.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Revelation 20:1-5

2. About the Text:

1) This is the end of the conflict in the book of Revelation.

2) Evil has been defeated; good has triumphed.

3) All that remains is for righteousness to exist forever.

4) This is what is being described now in this chapter.

DISCUSSION:

I.   The Coming of New Jerusalem

1. A New Heaven and a New Earth (1).

1) Isaiah 65:17, 2 Peter 3:13.

2) This new heaven and earth only come after death is destroyed.

3) The first heaven and first earth had passed away.

4) There was no more sea.

2. New Jerusalem (2).

1) This is the holy city.

2) It comes down out of heaven from God.

3) It is prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, the bridegroom (Matt.25:1-10).

3. The Pronouncement of a loud voice from Heaven (3-4)

1) The tabernacle of God is with men (John 1:14).

2) He will dwell with them (John 14:23).

3) They shall be his people (Exodus 6:7, Jeremiah 32:38).

4) God himself shall be with them and be their God (Leviticus 26:12).

5) God will wipe away every tear from their eyes (Rev.7:17).

6) There shall be no more

a. Death (Revelation 20:14, 1 Corinthians 15:26).

b. Sorrow

c. Crying

d. Pain (1 Corinthians 15:56).

7) The former things have passed away.

4. The pronouncement of He who sat on the throne (5-8, compare 20:11).

4) I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end (Isa.46:10).

5) I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.

6) He who overcomes will inherit all things (compare Rev.2-3).

7) “I will be his God and he shall be My son.” – family, identity.

8) In contrast, the rest will experience the second death (Rev.20:14).

II.  The Composition of New Jerusalem

1. The presentation (9-10).

1) One of the angels who poured the bowls spoke to John.

2) He said, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife” (Ephesians 5:23-33).

3) He carried John away in the spirit.

4) They went to a great and high mountain (Isaiah 2:1-4).

5) He showed John New Jerusalem, the great city.

6) It is descending (in process) out of heaven from God.

7) It has the glory of God (the Lamb, v.23).

2. The description (11-14).

1) The city light was like a clear jasper stone (red hue).

2) The city had a great and high wall (protected).

3) It had twelve gates.

a. There were twelve angels at the gates (guarded).

b. The names of the twelve tribes were written on them (Old Covenant).

c. Three gates for each cardinal point.

4) The wall of the city.

a. It had twelve foundations (solid, immovable).

b. The names of the twelve apostles were on the foundations (New Covenant).

3. The measurement (15-17).

1) The angel had a gold reed to measure the city, the gates and walls (God works by a plan, Ezekiel 40-43).

2) It is a square (cubed) city equal in width, breadth, and height (the most holy place was a cube in the temple, 1 Kings 6:20, Ezekiel 41:4).

3) Each side measured twelve thousand stadia (1380 miles).

4) The thickness of the wall was 144 cubits, 72 yards across.

4. The construction (18-21).

1) The wall was constructed of jasper.

2) The city was of pure gold like clear glass. 100% pure gold is clear.

3) The foundations of the wall were adorned with twelve precious stones.

m. Note: Twelve stones were set in the high priests breastplate (see Exodus 28:21).

4) The gates.

a. They were made of twelve pearls.

b. Each gate was made of one individual pearl.

5) The streets were pure gold like transparent glass.

III. The Consecration of New Jerusalem

1. The temple (22).

1) There is no physical temple (Acts 17:24).

2) The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple.

2. The light (23).

1) There is no sun or moon.

2) The glory of God illuminates the city.

3) The Lamb is the light.

3. The citizens (24).

1) The nations of the saved walk in its light.

2) The kings of the earth bring their glory and honor to it.

4. No closed gates (25).

5. No night there (25).

6. The nations will bring their glory and honor into it (26).

7. Nothing sinful enters it.

8. Only those written in the Lamb’s book of life enter.
