Worshipping the King of Glory – Psalm 24

2. About the Text:

1) This psalm of David is written upon the entrance of the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem.

2) The ark is the throne of God; where it goes, the presence of God goes with it.

3) This was during the time of the tabernacle, which was mobile in nature.

4) This psalm would have been sung upon the ark entering the gates of the city.

5) Later it would be used in reference to worship in the temple.

6) It is a psalm of ascents or entrance, an opening psalm.

1. “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, ??The world and those who dwell therein. ??For He has founded it upon the seas, ??And established it upon the waters” (1-2).

2. A dominion is a domain or place of rule.

3. God’s domain is everything and everyone.

1) “Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it” (Deuteronomy 10:14).

2) “For every beast of the forest is Mine, ??And the cattle on a thousand hills. ??I know all the birds of the mountains, ??And the wild beasts of the field are Mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you; ??For the world is Mine, and all its fullness” (Psalm 50:10-12).

3) “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11).

4. God came before everyone and everything.

1) “Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine” (Job 41:11).

2) “The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them” (Psalm 89:11).

3) “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth” (Psalm 33:6).

4) “He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion” (Jeremiah 10:12).

5. God created everything.

1) “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

2) “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3).

1. “Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? ??Or who may stand in His holy place? ??He who has clean hands and a pure heart, ??Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, ??Nor sworn deceitfully. ??He shall receive blessing from the LORD, ??And righteousness from the God of his salvation. ??This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, ??Who seek Your face.”

2. God is holy.

1) “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2).

2) “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:3).

3) “The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

3. We must be holy to worship God.

1) “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:14-16).

4. God makes us holy in His Son Jesus.

1) “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth…. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth” (John 17:17, 19).

2) “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

3) “By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:10).

1. “Lift up your heads, O you gates! ??And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! ??And the King of glory shall come in. ??Who is this King of glory? ??The LORD strong and mighty, ??The LORD mighty in battle. ??Lift up your heads, O you gates! ??Lift up, you everlasting doors! ??And the King of glory shall come in. ??Who is this King of glory? ??The LORD of hosts, ??He is the King of glory.”

2. We don’t talk much of majesty today.

1) The word is used of sovereigns, kings and queens.

2) It has its origins in the Latin “majus” and signified the greatness of God.

3) It includes notions of authority, sovereignty, power, and divinity – all that God is.

3. God is not like man.

1) “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).

2) “??Before the mountains were brought forth, ??Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, ??Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2).

3) “But the thunder of His power who can understand?” (Job 26:14).

4. God is to be respected as being in the highest place.

1) “Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it” (Deuteronomy 10:14).

2) “For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place” (Isaiah 57:15).

5. God is awesome.

1) “Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him” (Psalm 33:8).

2) “The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved” (Psalm 93:1).
