The God of Truth – Part 1
The Bible teaches that God always tells the truth and cannot lie. Titus 1:2 says, “in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.” Hebrews 6:18 states, “that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.”
That God cannot lie implies certain necessary corollaries. First, it is impossible for God to contradict Himself. Second, God will always keep his promises whether the promise is positive or negative. Third, God cannot be the author of confusion in the religious world today. With this one simple truth and its three corollaries, the counterfeit Christianity shatters.
Let’s look at the first corollary: It is impossible for God to contradict Himself. By definition, a contradiction is when two statements cannot both be true at the same time and in the same sense. In a true contradiction, one statement must be true and its counter must be false. Sometimes, statements sound contradictory when they are not truly because of differences in time, place, definitions of words, or circumstances. We must be careful not to assign a contradiction where there is no contradiction. Nevertheless, some statements are contradictory. For God to affirm a contradiction would make Him a liar.
Let’s explore a practical example. The statement “Baptism is necessary for salvation” is in contradiction to the statement “Baptism is NOT necessary for salvation.” One of these statements is true and one is necessarily false. God cannot be the author of both statements. The statement “God saves man by faith ONLY” and the statement “God does NOT save man by faith only” are contradictory statements. One is true and one is necessarily false. God cannot be the author of both statements.
