Speaking as the Oracles of God
“If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:11).
The word “oracle” has within it the notion of something coming out of the mouth, the oral cavity. So, an oracle is “a saying,” or “utterance.” One who speaks as the oracles of God is one who is saying the same thing that God says. He is speaking with God’s authority and blessing. He is not adding to nor taking away from the words of God, which would not be speaking as the oracles of God but saying something different. Paul said in Galatians 1:6-8, “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” Changing the message of the gospel is a sin against God, and we must not do it.
How do we speak as the oracles of God? We must set forth what the Bible teaches without compromise. Some will not accept it because it does not justify their sins or because it takes away their power. Some will humble themselves and obey because they love the truth. We must keep on preaching the gospel for the sake of those who will.
