Righteous Judgment – Part 4
Here is why we need to talk directly to our brother first before we start talking about him. A private consultation with a brother about an offense may reveal something that we do not know. It may even reveal that we misjudged something that he did. These things can be cleared up privately without the need for additional parties to intervene and especially without having to go before the “unjust” (1 Corinthians 6:1-8). It is ideal to resolve private offenses privately and not involve anyone else. This is best for both parties involved.
After one has spoken to a brother privately, and this brother refuses to repent, the second step is to bring two or three witnesses for the purpose of establishing every word. It is not enough with God for one person to go and start telling everyone about this situation. God demands that we take two or three with us. At this meeting, an accounting of all that has taken place will be recorded; the additional witnesses will judge the offense. If the judgment of these additional witnesses is not heard and obeyed, then the matter will be brought before the church.
The church has final authority regarding these offenses. By the time the issue is presented, it should be clear what the offending party has done and what he needs to do to correct the situation. If the church’s decision is not obeyed in this regard, then the one who committed the offence is to be as a heathen or publican. We must practice the instruction that Jesus gave about personal relationships regardless of our own personal discomforts. It is always best to resolve problems before they become bigger issues. If we truly love our brother, we will do these things, and we will avoid unrighteous judgment.
