Lessons from Children’s Songs – Part 3
“Climb Up The Mountain” is another great song. It was written by Mary Oler and arranged by Palmer Wheeler in the 1950s for children in the churches of Christ. This song teaches that everything that exists has been made by God’s hand and that it was made for man. This is what we read in Genesis 1.
Climb up the mountain; point to the sun.
Notice the grasses; count every one.
Measure the rainbow; sail o’er the sea.
God made the whole world lovely for me.
This song emphasizes that God is the creator of all things. It is an echo of Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth.” Children who sing these lyrics understand that God made everything simply by speaking it into existence. One cannot read Genesis 1 and get the idea that everything evolved over a long period of time without someone planting that idea first. This theory of evolution is false.
This song also emphasizes that God made these things for mankind. Isaiah 45:19 says, “For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: ‘I am the LORD, and there is no other.’” The ideas proposed by the environmental movement that the earth, plants, and animals have equal rights with humans is false. The earth was given to mankind by God to be used for people’s needs so that they could be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:28-30). So many today have rejected this idea. Children need to learn that the earth and everything in it is for their use and benefit and under our control. It is not a deity to worship.
