Families Must Be Built on God’s Word (Part 1)

God is the foundation of all spiritual families. Psalm 127:1a says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it.” We want to build our families with the Lord as the foundation. God wants great families!

In Genesis 2:18, we read, “And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” So, God formed Eve from Adam’s rib and presented her to him—the very first marriage! This started a new family. Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:23). Moses’ inspired commentary in Genesis 2:24 said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Thousands of years later, Jesus reiterated these thoughts in Matthew 19:4-6:

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Jesus made several things clear. First, families begin when a man and woman marry. Second, God begins this family by joining husband and wife together. Third, God does not want husbands and wives to separate. Marriage is intended to be a lifetime union. God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). The Bible only gives us one exception to this (Matthew 19:9). God wants loving commitment between husbands and wives to endure through many difficulties. This is for a reason; He wants godly offspring.

God bless you and I love you.
