The Seven Beatitudes of Revelation – Part 4 – Blessed are Those who are Called to the Marriage Supper
The fourth beatitude is related to those who have been invited to the marriage supper. “And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they that are bidden to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are true words of God” (Revelation 19:9). Christians are those who have been called (Romans 8:30, 1 Peter 5:10, Jude 1:1), and Jesus does the calling. This beatitude blesses those who are invited (called) in anticipation of their responding positively. Jesus calls everyone through the gospel (2 Thessalonians 2:14), and He offers His great invitation to all: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30:).
For those who respond to His call, they will participate in the marriage supper of the Lamb. This is a metaphor for Christ’s relationship to the church. “For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, being himself the saviour of the body” (Ephesians 5:23). Another great discussion of this relationship is in Romans 7:1-4. Christians have become dead to the law so that they may be married to another, Christ Jesus. Their identity comes from Him.
Revelation chapter twenty-one reveals the relationship of Christ to the church in its fullness. The church is the bride, the Lamb’s wife whom the angel reveals to John (Revelation 21:9). So, blessed are those who have been called because they will receive all of the blessings the Lamb has to offer His bride; they become members of the family of God.
