Who Made God?

bible-questions

We are contingent beings. What does that mean? It means that we depend upon others for our existence. I do not owe the explanation for myself to myself. My biological parents are responsible for my existence in a physical sense. Spiritually speaking, the Bible says that God is the Father of spirits (Hebrews 12:9). I take this to mean that God is the one who has created our spirit/soul, and its existence is also contingent, meaning, that my spirit did not originate itself; God brought it into being through His creative power. We can also see the contingency of other things in the world. We study biology to learn how both animals give rise to other animals. We see plants making seeds so that there can be more plants. Everything in the created world owes its existence to something else.

We even use this fact as an argument for the existence of God. We say, “For every effect there must be an adequate cause.” The universe is a great effect. What is its adequate cause? The answer can only be God. All other answers do not make sense. Something cannot come from nothing. The universe is not eternal; it had a beginning and it will have an end. Therefore, something beyond the universe with great power and purpose must have made the universe. Only God could fill that role.

Both of these lines of thought naturally cause another question in our mind. Who made God? Where did He come from? God was not born like human beings are born, and neither did he ever have a beginning. The Bible teaches that God has always existed. Psalm 90:1-2 says, “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” Psalm 93:2 says, “Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting.” In other words, God never had a beginning and He will never have an end. He is eternal. This is a hard concept to understand, but that is what the Bible says about God.

We may contrast this with many different mythological stories of the various “gods” in pagan culture. In Greek mythology, Zeus was the greatest god, but even he was born from Cronus and Rhea. In Hindu mythology, Brahma is said to have come from an egg that emerged from an eternal ocean. Most pagan deities have some kind of explanation for the existence of their gods. The Bible does not explain the existence of God; it simply declares it. How could God not have a beginning? He has the explanation for Himself inside Himself. He is wholly self sufficient and self sustaining. He lives in eternity. Isaiah 57:15 affirms this: “For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’” God’s existence isn’t like ours. He exists in a very special way outside the boundaries of the way that we live. So, to answer this question, God was not made at all. He has always existed. 1 Timothy 6:16 says of God that He “alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.”
