God Must Lead our Homes
Husbands and wives can agree on who will lead the home—God! When people reject God’s word, they distort the pattern of leadership in the home. Adam and Eve’s home was distorted by the Devil. He tempted Eve. She was deceived (1 Timothy 2:14). She became the leader, gave the fruit to her husband, and he followed her in committing sin (Genesis 3:6). Why was Adam not a better leader? He did not let God’s word guide him. He refused to stand up against the influence of the Devil. He did not correct his wife when she was on the precipice of going astray. What did he want? What did she want? What did they get?
Leadership goes astray because of competing desires. The husband wants one thing; the wife wants another. They end up disagreeing or compromising so that both get what they want (supposedly). They really do not get everything they want; the struggle renews. This pushes husbands and wives apart from one another. The question that must be asked by all is, “What does God want?” Does He want what we want? Do we want what He wants? How do we know? Is what we are pursuing glorifying God? We must let the word of God direct our lives. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Husbands and wives need to talk about their desires, plan how to resolve differences, and resolve to keep his or her commitments whatever they might be (Psalm 15:4c). Commitments remind us of who we are and what we are—our identity in Christ! We must speak the truth in love to one another, especially to our spouses (Ephesians 4:15). This is how we mature in Christ.
God bless you, and I love you.
