PROPOSITION: In Hebrews 1 we learn that Jesus is God due to His 1) Authority as God, 2) Identity as God, 3) Relationship to the Creation as God, 4) Superiority over the angels as God.

OBJECTIVE: To understand that because Jesus is God, he can be the perfect high priestly mediator between God and man.

AIM: To understand who Jesus really is in relationship to all things.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Hebrews 1:1-4

2. About the Text:

1) The book of Hebrews is about showing that Jesus is our High Priest.

2) Hebrews 8:1 – “Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven….”

3) The role of the High Priest is that of a mediator.

a. The high priest wore a breast plate with all of the names of the tribes of Israel on it.

b. Exodus 28:29 – “So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart, when he goes into the Holy Place, to bring them to regular remembrance before the Lord.”

c. On his head, he wore a headpiece that said, “Holy to Yahweh” (Exodus 28:36).

4) Jesus is High Priest because He is the perfect mediator being both God and man.

5) He shows that He is God in chapter 1.

6) He shows that He is sinless man in chapter 2.

7) He shows that He is a better mediator than Moses in chapter 3.

8) The book also shows that Jesus has a better covenant, sacrifice, priesthood, and promises.

DISCUSSION: In Hebrews 1, we learn that Jesus is God due to His . . .

I.   Authority as God.

1. At one time, the prophets were God’s voice of authority.

1) Romans 16:25-27

2) Ephesians 3:3-5

3) 2 Peter 1:19-21

2. Jesus is now God’s voice of authority.

1) Matthew 17:1-8 – transfiguration – hear Him!

2) John 17:1-2 – authority over all flesh.

3) Matthew 28:18 – all authority.

II.  Identity as God

1. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory.

1) Mark 9:2-3 – brighter than any cleaner can get it.

2) 2 Peter 1:17 – majesty.

3) Why radiance? See Exodus 34:29-30.

2. Jesus is the exact image of God’s nature.

1) John 1:18 – “No one has seen God at any time . . . .”

2) Colossians 1:15 – “He is the image . . . .”

3) John 14:9 – “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

3. Jesus sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

1) Luke 22:69 – Jesus said he would sit at the right hand of God.

2) Acts 2:33 – responsible for sending the Holy Spirit.

3) Hebrews 10:12 – offered sacrifice to sit at the right hand.

III. Relationship to the Creation as God.

1. Jesus is heir of all things.

1) Romans 8:17

2) Galatians 3:29

2. God made the universe through Jesus.

1) John 1:1

2) Colossians 1:16

3. Jesus sustains all things by the power of His word.

1) Colossians 1:17

2) 2 Peter 3:7

4. Jesus made purification for the sins of humanity.

2) Hebrews 9:12

IV.   Superiority over the Angels as God.

1. Jesus is superior to the angels as He has a more excellent name.

2. This is the name of “Son.”

1) Psalm 2:7

2) 2 Samuel 7:14

3. The angels worshipped Jesus and are His servants.

1) Psalm 97:7

2) Psalm 104:4

4. The Son’s throne and rule are forever – Psalm 45:6-7

5. The Son does not change – Psalm 102:25-27

6. Angels are ministering spirits that serve those who inherit salvation.

CONCLUSION:
