SUBJECT: Attitudes

TITLE: “Seek the Things Which Are Above”

PROPOSITION: In order to set our affections on the things which are above we must 1) Value the things which are above, 2) Visualize the things which are above, and 3) Venerate the things which are above, and 4) Venture the things which are above.

OBJECTIVE: Each should desire to seek the things which are above, heavenly things.

AIM: To encourage everyone to have an attitude of spirituality.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Colossians 3:1-4

2. About the Text:

1) The church at Colossae was having problems with false teachers.

2) They were teaching some that spirituality lay in a strict regimen of asceticism.

3) This is the teaching that in order to be spiritual one must deny the physical body of certain things.

4) Paul flat out rejected that concept.

5) Instead, we learn that we are supposed to seek spiritual things to be spiritual!

3. About the sermon:

1) There are physical pursuits and there are spiritual pursuits.

2) There are some physical things that must be pursued.

3) But there are MANY physical things that we pursue that don’t need to be pursued.

4) There are also many spiritual things that need to be pursued.

5) One can never go wrong pursuing spiritual things.

6) We need to seek the things which are above!

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: In order to s the things that are above we must . . .

I.   Value the things that are above!

1. We seek what we value!

1) We’ve just finished the Christmas shopping season.

2) So we all know what it means to seek something that someone values.

3) We don’t seek that which we don’t value.

4) In order to seek that which is above we must first value those things!

2. What is the value of the things that are above?

1) The love of God. John 3:16

2) The cost was the blood of the Son of God. 1 Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”

3) The payoff is eternal life. Romans 6:23b “…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

3. Why ought we to value the things above?

1) Because love is worth valuing. 1 John 4:16 “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.”

2) Because life is worth valuing. John 10:10b “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

3) 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 “Because eternal things are worth valuing. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

II.  Visualize the things that are above!

1. Set your mind on the things that are above!

1) How do we do that?

2) We’ve got to set our mind on the things of the Spirit! Consider Romans 8:6 “To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (ESV)

2. Hear the words of the Spirit.

1) The only way we can know what the Spirit desires of us is through His word. Consider 1 Corinthians 2:11-13 “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

2) We must be a people of the word to be a people of the Spirit. Consider Ephesians 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

3. Know the fruit of the Spirit. Consider Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

4. Think about the things of the Spirit. Consider Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

III. Venerate the things that are above!

1. The word “venerate” means to regard with respect and reverence and we need to show due reverence and respect in regard to the things of God.

2. When we recognize what is really worthy of respect, then we will set our affections on the things that are above because they are worthy of our respect and honor.

3. So many venerate the things of man.

1) In religion this takes the form of worship for entertainment.

2) In society some think that all that must be done is satisfy physical human needs.

3) Marriage is being changed into a wholly carnal relationship.

4) Many believe that government can solve all of our problems.

5) These are all man-centered desires.

4. Our goal ought not to be to please men, but God!

1) 1 Corinthians 7:23 “Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.”

2) Galatians 1:10 “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

5. Man needs to recognize his place in relationship to God.

1) Man is the creature, not the Creator – Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

2) Man is the sinner, not the Savior – Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

3) Man is the minister, not the Master – 1 Peter 4:11 “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”

IV.  Venture the things that are above!

1. It’s not enough to consider Christianity on a mental level. It’s got to be practiced.

1) Not just hearers of the word, but doers. Consider James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

2) Be a wise man, not a foolish one. Consider Matthew 7:24-27

3) Walk in the Spirit. Consider Galatians 5:25 “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

2. How?

1) Abstain from the love of the world. That will distract us from spiritual things. Consider 1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

2) Lay up our treasures in heaven. (We don’t expect reward in this life for our good deeds.) Consider Matthew 6:20-21 “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

3) Love our neighbors. Galatians 5:14 “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

4) Love our enemies. Consider Romans 12:20-21 “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

5) Visit the sick; care for the elderly; give to the orphans; aid the impoverished. Consider James 1:27 “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

CONCLUSION:

1. To seek the things which are above, we need to . . .

1) Value the things which are above.

2) Visualize the things which are above.

3) Venerate the things which are above.

4) Venture the things which are above.
