Personal Ways to Evangelize

Date written: 5 February 2015

SUBJECT: Evangelism

TITLE: Personal Ways to Evangelize

PROPOSITION: We do the greatest job of evangelizing by non-verbally communicating through our own lives 1) God’s love, 2) the Problem of Sin, and 3) the Message of Forgiveness.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of evangelism is to bring people together in peace and love in the body of Christ, the only place where such is really possible.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Acts 8:4-5

2. About the Text:

1) Philip went to Samaria and preached Christ.

2) The message that Philip gave was backed up by the life that he lived.

3) We first encounter Philip in Acts 6:5; he was one of the men appointed to help widows.

4) This speaks very highly of him and his character.

5) We also know that Philip had four daughters who were virgins and prophesied (Acts 21:9).

6) He seems to have been a wonderful husband and father.

3. When others see that we not only preach Jesus, but live our lives for him, that means something.

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION:

I.   Communicate the Love of God

1. God has loved us and demonstrated it: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

2. Love your wife, your kids, and your family.

1) Husbands are to love their wives – Eph.5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”

2) Wives and mothers are to love their husbands and children – “That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children” (Titus 2:4).

3. Love the church.

1) 1 Peter 2:17 – “Love the brotherhood.”

2) “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” (Romans 12:10).

4. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

5. Love is authentic, and people will see that in you.

6. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

II.  Communicate the Problem of Sin

1. The world has a sin problem (1 John 5:19 – “the world lies in wickedness”).

2. We can see this just by looking at the nightly news: hatred, violence, racism, murder, rape, theft, etc.

3. The greatest error has always been in denying that we have a sin problem.

1) Many try to explain it as a consequence of genetics.

2) Others try to blame others except self.

3) We cannot deny the sin that is in our own life; it begins with us.

4. “The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, saith, He will not require it. All his thoughts are, There is no God” (Psalm 10:4).

5. Don’t deny sin in your own life. Doing so just makes us liars (1 John 1:8, 10).

6. Acknowledging your sins and showing how Christ changed you is authentic.

7. We need humility to do this. “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6).

III. Communicate the Message of Forgiveness

1. Let others know that we all need forgiveness.

2. Let others know we all get forgiveness the same way—through Jesus.

1) Jesus preached repentance and remission of sins (Luke 24:48).

2) We are baptized to receive forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).

3) He shed his blood for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28).

3. Remember that to get forgiveness we must forgive.

1) “But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 11:26).

2) “Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him” (Luke 17:3).

4. Be a forgiving person.

5. Do not allow grudges in your life.

6. Love other people enough to accept them into your life.

1) This doesn’t mean that you have to condone what they are saying or doing.

2) It doesn’t mean that you approve of them if they are impenitent.

3) It does mean that you love them and want what is best for them.

7. Authentic forgiveness comes from a heart that loves other people.

8. We forgive because we love.

9. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).

CONCLUSION:

1. We do our best job evangelizing as much by what we do as by what we say.

2. Remember to evangelize by what you personally do in your life.

1) Communicate God’s Love

2) Communicate the Problem of Sin

3) Communicate the Message of Forgiveness

3. Invitation
