1. Read: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

2. About the Text:

1) The Lord’s Supper is a time when we remember the death of Jesus.

2) Sometimes we sing a song before the Lord’s Supper to help us think about it.

3) “Come Share the Lord” is a newer song in our song book that does this.

4) The song is written by Bryan Jeffery Leach in 1984.

DISCUSSION: When we partake of the Lord’s Supper . . .

I.   We declare the oneness of Christ’s body.

1. “We gather here in Jesus name; His love is burning in our hearts like living flame, For thro’ the loving Son the Father makes us one: Come take the bread; come drink the wine; come, share the Lord. No one is a stranger here; Everyone belongs.”

2. Later in the song we sing, “We are now a family, of which the Lord is Head; Tho’ unseen He meets us here in the breaking of the bread.”

3. In this part of the song, the unity of the body of Christ is emphasized.

4. “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Corinthians 10:16-17).

5. Consider also Ephesians 2:13-22.

II.  We remember the death of Jesus and its purpose.

1. “Finding our forgiveness here, We in turn forgive all wrongs. He joins us here; He breaks the bread. The Lord who pours the cup is risen from the dead. The one we love the most is now our gracious host: Come, take the bread; come, drink the wine; come, share the Lord.”

2. In Matthew 26:26-29, Notice several things.

1) Jesus used the bread and cup to symbolize his body and blood.

2) Eating of the bread and drinking of the cup declare fellowship with Jesus.

3) The blood that Jesus shed and that we remember was for the forgiveness of sins.

4) Jesus participates in the supper in His Father’s kingdom, the church.

3. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.

III. We look forward to the Lord’s return.

1. “We’ll gather soon where angels sing; We’ll see the glory of our Lord and coming King. Now we anticipate the feast for which we wait; Come, take the bread; come, drink the wine; come, share the Lord.”

2. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

3. Jesus is coming back and we need to be prepared and stay prepared.

4. Matthew 24:36-51.
