Back To School Time

The football teams are scrimmaging.  Teachers are preparing their classrooms.  The band is practicing.    Fall registration is under way.  It’s that time of year when we get ready to go back to school!  Several have asked, “Are you ready to go back to school?”  The kids say, “No, we want more summer vacation!”  The parents say, “Yes, we are ready for them to go and grow!”  Grandma says, “They need more school clothes!”  The teachers say, “Bring them on!”  The principals say, “Let’s be safe!”  There are so many folks involved, and there is much preparation being made.  I am grateful for our schools and their efforts!

As Christians, what should we be thinking about as we go back to school?  While we are buying clothes, we should also be thinking about buying truth!  Proverbs 23:23 says: “Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.”  The truth is the most important thing that we can know.  Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  Jesus was talking about being free from sin, the most destructive force in the universe.  We teach our kids how to avoid oncoming traffic as they cross the road; let’s teach them to keep sin out of their lives!

While we are bringing our pens and pencils to class, let’s also bring a good attitude!  Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, “Do all things without complaining and disputing!” (Philippians 2:14).  Having a bad attitude toward school or others can really hurt the efforts of the school to instruct our children.  We need to be cooperative and loving toward them helping them to do the job that we have asked them to do.  God bless you and I love you.
